Standard 2

Educators act ethically and maintain the integrity, credibility and reputation of the profession.

Educators play a vital role in setting an example for learners both inside and outside the classroom. As role models, they are held to a higher standard and must remain mindful of how their conduct reflects not only the school they represent but also the teaching profession as a whole. It is essential for educators to align their ethics and actions with the Professional Standards for BC Educators, ensuring their behaviour fosters trust, respect, and a positive learning environment.

As a future educator beginning to explore the ethics of teaching and the laws and responsibilities associated with the profession, I found Mr. RJay Berra’s presentation on his experiences as an educator in School District No. 57 incredibly insightful. His reflections provided valuable guidance on maintaining professionalism in the teaching field. Mr. Berra emphasized three key points:

  • Building meaningful relationships with students is essential, but maintaining healthy boundaries is equally important to ensure a professional and respectful dynamic.
  • Organization and accountability in the profession are reflections of the school and work environment. Educators are expected to consistently demonstrate preparedness and professionalism.
  • Conduct outside the classroom is just as important as behaviour inside it. Educators are expected to lead by example in all aspects of their lives.

In his presentation, Mr. Berra shared numerous stories about his students’ success in both hockey and their academic and professional lives. A common theme throughout these stories was the genuine relationships he has built with his students and the time he has invested in guiding them toward their passions. However, he emphasized that while strong connections foster trust and create a positive learning environment, it is equally important to maintain healthy boundaries to ensure the teacher-student dynamic remains professional and respectful. Although Mr. Berra has a friendly rapport with his students, when at school or on the ice, they are always aware that he is their coach and teacher, and that respectful language and behaviour are expected at all times. By balancing these relationships with respect and professionalism, both educators and students can benefit from a safe, supportive, and productive learning environment.

Mr. Berra emphasized the importance of time management and accountability in the teaching profession. Given the unique nature of his role, which requires him to travel across Canada while also being based at PGSS, effective time management, and organization are essential for him to provide the best support to his students. Being well-prepared is key to being a successful educator. It not only eases the mind but also ensures that students receive high-quality lessons. Moreover, teaching involves ongoing interactions with colleagues, staff, and parents/guardians, making preparedness and organization even more crucial. These qualities not only reflect on the individual teacher but also on the school and the profession as a whole.

As Mr. Berra is involved in the hockey community, he is often surrounded by his students, their parents, and other staff members outside of school hours. In his presentation, he stressed the importance of maintaining professionalism even beyond the classroom. He emphasized that educators must uphold a professional reputation at all times. As a young adult who has recently begun working as an uncertified teacher in School District No. 57, I found this advice particularly valuable. It serves as a constant reminder that, as educators, we are role models for students in every aspect of our lives. The language we use and the decisions we make, both inside and outside of the classroom, are closely observed by our students, and they often mirror our actions. Being mindful of this responsibility is crucial in maintaining the trust and respect that is vital to our role as educators.

Mr. Berra’s insights reinforced the importance of Standard 2: relationship building, professionalism, and leading by example. His advice is a reminder that our actions, both in and outside the classroom, shape the learning environment and influence students. As I move forward in my teaching career, I will keep these principles in mind to ensure trust, respect, and a positive influence in my future classrooms.

A wonderfully enlightening video on building meaningful relationships with students.
